I am sure your family gives you a nice lunch everyday. Remember your prayers before your lunch and can you do a little movement, after lunch? 

Religion: Let's pray 3 Hail Mary for our world and for each other.

In the Religion book (way in the front ) there should be a Saint Joseph little book. (sorry if you do not have one..do not worry). Read the book with a family member.:)

Parents Prayer to St. Joseph

O glorious St. Joseph, to you God committed the care of His only begotten Son amid the many dangers of this world. We come to you and ask you to take under your special protection the children God has given us. Through holy baptism they became children of God and members of His holy Church. We consecrate them to you today, that through this consecration they may become your foster children. Guard them, guide their steps in life, form their hearts after the hearts of Jesus and Mary.

St. Joseph, who felt the tribulation and worry of a parent when the child Jesus was lost, protect our dear children for time and eternity. May you be their father and counsellor. Let them, like Jesus, grow in age as well as in wisdom and grace before God and men. Preserve them from the corruption of his world, and give us the grace one day to be united with them in Heaven forever. Amen.

Reading/ Phonics:

Reading connection pg. 303 This is the little book that we read as a class.  Quick, Quick, Quick!
Preview and Predict:
Read the title. Have your child repeat. Describe the picture on the first page using key words to front load the vocabulary. Ask your child to tell what they think the text is about and why, noting the details in the the picture and title.

First Read (Read Together) Have your child point to each word as they chorally read it aloud. If they have difficulty with a word, provide corrective feedback. Have your child reread the sentence with corrected word. Confirm the word is correct by asking your child  to use other clues: For example, ask: Does the word make sense in the sentence? Is it the kind of word that would fit?  (e.g. noun , verb)? Is it the right word? 

Check Comprehension: Ask questions about the text. Discuss with a family member.

• What animals run in the story? Circle the words that tell you.
• How do the animals run? Point to the words that tell you?
• Why do yo think the animals are running? What clues in the picture help you decide? 
• Who do you think is telling Hen, Cat, and Duck to run? Why are these animals jumping up and down?
• Circle the high Frequency words: there and out

When you are finished with the book... can you review some of the sight words that was sent home? 

In the packet of papers that are stapled, there is a paper that titled: Lesson 1 Writing Alphabet Letters Qq.  There is a picture of a queen and a quarter.  Practice writing some Qq's.

Yesterday I sent a paper on addition with the stars.  Let's fill out the number sentence.
For example: 1. write number 1 under the first box. +  write 5 in the next box = write 6 in the last box.  The sum means adding/counting  the 2 groups together.

It's the first day of Spring!!  I usually read the book, Song of the Swallows . It's a sweet story...It mentions St. Joesph Day.

** Practice saying the sound of Q:
Today we will practice writing the letter Q.  Pg. 305
We start at the top and curve down to the left and complete the circle at the top.  Use the lines to help you. The next stroke is a short slant starting below the dotted line(middle of the house) and ends at the bottom.  Lower case q: Start at the dotted line (the middle of the "house") circle to the left.  The circle should touch the middle and the bottom of the "house."  Then put your pencil back-up to the middle of the house and  pull down and curve to the right. This letter falls below the bottom of the house.  Write the letters qu under the picture that begin with the Q /kw/ sound. Pictures name: 1. quilt, 2. quack, 3.quiz, 4. key. 5. heart, 6. queen.  You do not need to write the letters under the other pictures.

3. The boy found lots of cats in his travels. What kinds did  he see? What do you know about these cats?
4. What parts of this story do you think could happen in real life? What parts would probably not happen in real life?

5. Draw a picture of your favorite cat form this story.  You can use you journal or another piece of paper. Write a sentence:
 This is my favorite cat from the story.   Try your best boys and girls...and God will do the rest. :)

Math: In the folder that was sent home, there is a packet of papers that is labeled: complete if only needed. There is a paper titled: TIME BY THE HOUR.  Complete that paper and then do the following directions.

Can you find your clown clocks?  Show the following times: 2:00, 5:00, 11:00.
*Show the time our school day starts.
* Show the time you have dinner.
If you can not find it's ok !!! Not a problem. Just review on a clock in your home. :)

Let's try time by the half hour.  2:30, 4:30. 9:30.  Remember the big hand is always on the 6 and the little hand is between the two numbers. For example: 2:30 ..the big hand on the 6 and the little hand is between the 2 and the 3.

Science/Social Studies:
Let's review the four food groups; Here is a cute video to watch about the food groups.
I'm not 100% sure if I put in a food group paper in the folder.  If not no worries. Sorry about that.  Can you draw a food that you may have already eaten and write a sentence about it. You can use a piece of paper or your journal book.

• There is a paper with word families. "Lucky Word Families"  Please color the correct shamrock  (4 leaf clover) hat goes along with word family.
• There is a green construction paper with words on it.  Cut out the hearts to make a shamrock that goes along with the correct word family.  Glue onto the other construction paper.  If for some reason you do not have it glue onto another paper. I believe there is a little sample on the bottom of the green paper.
• CVC Shamrocks: Write the correct word under each picture. (Left-Right- pig, web, tub, hat, fox, lip, sun, pot

There is a Lots of O' Green Book.  Have fun cutting and coloring the shamrock out. on Page #3 cut out arms and glue onto the correct place.

Religion : There is a green paper with 3 hearts. God the Father , God the Son   God the Holy Spirit and stem with The Holy Trinity. Cut and glue onto a piece of paper or you could also glue this on to the other side of the shamrock word family paper.  There is a nice St. Patrick's Day prayer paper too.

If you  have time-there is a St. Patrick's day book ..cut and glue the sight word : was onto every page. I believe there might be another coloring paper to color too.  (if you have time)

The below note is from the OPS School Counselor. It's filled with very helpful parenting information. I have adapted it for the SJS community. Kindly post it to your blog to help families navigate the conversation with their children through this coronavirus.

Dear SJS Community,

Parenting is the hardest job in the world, and times like this can be the most challenging of all.  While some children may be relatively unaffected and view the school closure as an extended vacation, others may have real, serious concerns about what they hear or see, relatives at high-risk, or just not cope well with change.  Children's experiences can be as varied and as intense as those of adults.  Keeping the lines of communication open among all family members is an important first step to helping each other through difficult times.

In an effort to support you and your children, please see below some guidelines to help manage the impact of recent events, as well as tips on how to talk with your children about COVID-19.  More detailed information can be found in the articles linked throughout and at the end of this email.  We hope you find the following to be helpful:

1. Children take their emotional cues from adults.  One's nonverbal messages are just as important (if not more so) than one's verbal messages.  If your child sees you in a panic, s/he will likely experience a lot more fear and anxiety than if s/he observes you being careful, cautious, and thoughtful, but calm.  To help maintain a calm atmosphere at home, ask your child to show you how to do "belly breaths," "balloon breathing," or "flower breathing," and practice this diaphragmatic breathing together for a few minutes each day.

2. Maintain as much of a normal routine as possible.  Even though your child won't be going to school, try to maintain the same scheduled wake-up time and mealtimes.  Suggest that your child to work on schoolwork in the order of his/her regular school day schedule (Some may prefer to exercise control and change the order instead. Whichever works for you and your child is fine.)  Make sure mealtimes and bedtimes are consistent and that you and your child are getting enough sleep.  These efforts can go a long way in helping everyone cope with the stress that comes with a change of this magnitude. 

3. Limit your child's exposure to various news media, whether by TV, internet, or social media. Constantly watching for status updates about COVID-19 or other closures can increase anxiety. Furthermore, some information can be inappropriate for young ears and/or difficult for them to understand, which also increases confusion and anxiety.  Make time to "unplug" with your child and play a game, read a book, or watch a movie instead.

4.  Don't be afraid to discuss COVID-19.  Most children have already heard about it, so it's best to make sure they have the facts.  Focus on what we can do to remain well, like washing your hands frequently, avoiding touching your face, keeping distance between yourself and others, covering coughs and sneezes with a tissue, and cleaning and disinfecting surfaces daily.  While it may be tempting to avoid talking about COVID-19, remember that for some children, not talking about it can actually make them worry more. 

5.  Be developmentally appropriate.  A conversation about COVID-19 with a sixth grader is likely to sound different than a conversation with a second grader.  If you find it hard to know how much to say, take your cues from your child.  Ask him/her to tell you what s/he already knows.  This will give you an idea of the level of detail s/he is interested in, as well as the language s/he is already using about the topic.  Answer questions slowly and thoughtfully, taking care not to offer more information than was requested.  If you receive confused or inquisitive looks in return, invite another question.  And remember, it's ok to say you don't know.

6.  Avoid the blame game.  Fear has a tendency to leave people feeling out of control.  One way we feign control over the unknown is to fabricate stories about who or what is to blame.  Unfortunately in these situations, innocent groups are made to suffer the consequences. Be mindful of your and your child's language.  Address any instances of blame immediately by recognizing them as an unfounded attempt to assuage fear.

7.  Encourage your child to keep talking.  Even after having the conversation once, children can be reluctant to broach a difficult topic a second or third time. Remember to check in with your child every day or two to see if they've thought of any new questions or developed any new concerns. This can go a long way to helping your child feel safe talking with you about anything.

We hope the above information helps ease the fear and anxiety some of you and/or your children may be feeling.  Please know that while schools are closed, teachers, and the administration, will still be available to answer your questions and support you.  Feel free to reach out via email with any questions or concerns you may have about the above, or any other situation that may arise in the coming weeks.
